The cable car is a scenic part of an N Seoul Tower visit, but it is not the only way up Namsan. Buses 01A and 01B reach the tower stop for much less; walking gives you a park visit, provided the slope and weather suit you. The choice is easier when you count the whole route: getting to the lower cable station, reaching the tower after arrival, any separate observatory ticket, and the trip back.
Pick for your group, not for the famous photo
| Your priority | Start with | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Spend less and avoid a steep walk | Namsan circular bus 01A or 01B | Bus stop, live departure, transport-card balance and the return service |
| See the city from the ride itself | Cable car | Weather operation, queue, fare and the walk to its lower station |
| Enjoy Namsan Park on the way | A marked walking route | Slope, daylight, footwear, weather and a return alternative |
| Several different needs in one party | One mode up, another down | Separate tickets and where the two return points actually are |

Bus 01A and 01B: the economical route
The tower operator’s bus directions list Namsan circular buses 01A and 01B, including a boarding point near Chungmuro Station Exit 2. Both serve the N Seoul Tower stop. The operator currently lists ₩1,500 per ride, transport card only, and 06:30–23:00 service; check the live stop display for your date. Routes and the last useful return bus can change. A bus stop at the tower is not the same as an observatory admission ticket.
For two adults making an out-and-back trip, four bus rides at the listed fare total ₩6,000, provided those fares still apply. Compare that with two adult cable-car round trips at the currently listed ₩15,000 each: ₩30,000. The ₩24,000 difference is the cost of choosing a different transport experience, not a saving on observation-deck tickets. This example excludes the price of a new transport card and any other travel to the boarding stop.
Cable car: count the approach as well as the ride
According to the operator’s cable-car directions, leave Myeongdong Station Exit 3 and walk roughly 10–15 minutes toward the lower boarding station via the street beside Pacific Hotel. That approach includes an uphill section; the cable car does not begin at the subway exit. The operator also describes Namsan Ormi, a free inclined elevator between Namsan Tunnel No. 3 and the lower cable station. Its page lists a Monday 09:00–14:00 maintenance suspension and weather-related interruptions. Confirm its status before making it essential to your route.
The operator currently lists adult cable-car fares of ₩12,000 one way and ₩15,000 round trip, usually 10:00–23:00, subject to weather and operating changes. A cable-car ticket carries you up or down the hillside; it does not automatically include the tower observation deck. If you intend to enter the paid deck, check the official hours and separate admission price.
Walking and the mixed-route option
Namsan has several marked paths; use an official Seoul’s Namsan walking-route guide to choose one from your actual starting point. The shortest-looking line may be steep or include steps. Walking up and riding down, or using the cable car one way and the bus the other, can reduce the climb without paying for two cable rides. Price each leg separately and make sure your return stop is reachable; a one-way cable ticket does not provide a bus ride.
Do not plan to be dropped by an ordinary taxi at the tower door. The operator says general vehicle access to Namsan has been restricted. Arrange a permitted lower drop-off and the final bus, cable car or walk. If rain, wind or a long queue changes the plan, the bus may be a better fallback, provided it is still operating.
Before heading down after dark
- Save the location and direction of your chosen return stop or cable station while it is still light.
- Check the last usable departure to your accommodation, including any subway after the bus or cable car.
- Keep a charged phone, transport-card balance and a weather-suitable walking alternative.
