Jongmyo Entry: Choose a Guided Tour Day or a Self-Guided Day

Choose Jongmyo’s entry format before choosing an arrival time. The current operator table lists Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays for self-guided visits; Monday, Thursday and Friday use timed guided entry. Tuesday is the regular closure.

Use the operator’s current weekday table

Older guides and even the Seoul tourism listing describe only the last Wednesday of the month as self-guided. The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center’s current table instead says every Wednesday. Use that operator table and its latest notices for your chosen date. A holiday can also move the normal closure; do not use a weekday rule alone to confirm access.

Match a timed visit to a language

For timed days the operator lists English at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00; Japanese at 09:40, 11:40, 13:40 and 15:40. Guided entry means arriving for the selected language session, not entering at any time and joining later. Read the current reservation or on-site ticket terms from the operator. Tour languages are not automatically available in all six languages of this article.

Leave time for ticketing and the whole tour

The operator describes an approximately 50-minute guided visit. Allow time beforehand for reaching the entrance and obtaining the correct ticket. October self-guided hours in the table are 09:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:00. Those general hours do not create a 17:00 English guided session. Keep any later reservation outside the complete visit and your chosen travel buffer.

Keep regular hours separate from special access

The table separates ordinary entry from other viewing arrangements. Check notices for ceremonies or restricted areas rather than infer access from a general ticket. The tourism listing still contains a restoration note dated to 2024; it cannot prove a hall is currently closed. If a specific hall or special program is essential, verify that item on its own current page.

A worked example

Hypothetical choice: you can visit on Wednesday 21 October or Thursday 22 October. Under the current operator table, Wednesday allows self-guided planning; Thursday needs a timed session. For an English visit starting at 14:00, the stated 50-minute tour alone reaches about 14:50. Add your own exit and travel buffer before a 15:00 appointment elsewhere.
