Incheon Airport to Myeongdong and Hongdae: Train, Bus and Taxi

For Hongdae, take the AREX All-stop Train to Hongik University. For Myeongdong, compare AREX plus Subway Line 4 with airport bus 6015. The right choice depends on your hotel’s address, your luggage and the services still running when you leave the terminal.

This guide starts at Incheon International Airport (ICN), after immigration, baggage collection and customs. It covers Hongdae, Myeongdong, Gyeongbokgung and Dongdaemun Design Plaza, with Korean phrases you can show a taxi driver. Gimpo Airport (GMP) is a different airport: do not use ICN fares or terminal instructions for a GMP arrival.

Incheon Airport to Seoul: choose the route before the ticket

Save your hotel’s Korean name, full street address and map pin. “Myeongdong” and “Hongdae” describe large areas, not individual entrances. Compare the final walk as well as the train or bus ride.

All-stop figures are adult transport-card fares for the named stations, not a through fare to every hotel. A single-use card adds ₩100 to the adult fare plus a refundable ₩500 deposit. Check any onward subway charge separately. See AREX’s official fare table.

AREX lists Express travel times of 43 minutes between T1 and Seoul Station and 51 minutes between T2 and Seoul Station. These are train times, excluding immigration, waiting and onward travel. Its page advertises ₩13,000 while also listing higher normal tariffs; confirm your selected departure’s checkout price. To Hongdae: the All-stop Train, not the Express

1. At your arrival terminal, follow the Airport Railroad / AREX signs to the railway area.
2. Choose All-stop Train / 일반열차, heading toward Seoul Station. Check the departure board before entering the platform.
3. Get off at Hongik University / 홍대입구. Stay on the same train from the airport; an Express ticket would take you past this destination to Seoul Station.
4. Open the saved hotel pin before choosing an exit. The exit for a hotel in Yeonnam-dong may be different from the one for Hongdae’s shopping streets. With a suitcase, follow elevator signs rather than assuming the most famous exit is the easiest.

The operator’s Hongik University station information includes timetables and a station layout. On the return journey, check whether your train reaches T1 or T2; the two airport stations are not interchangeable.

To Myeongdong: rail for price, bus for a convenient stop

By AREX and Subway Line 4

Take AREX to Seoul Station / 서울역. Follow signs for Subway Line 4, then board in the direction of Hoehyeon / 회현 and Myeongdong / 명동. Myeongdong is two stops from Seoul Station: Hoehyeon, then Myeongdong. Allow time for the walk between AREX and the subway platforms. If you used Express, its ticket does not include this subway ride.

Check the station sequence and current service in Seoul Metro’s route planner. The official multilingual subway map listing provides another reference if the planner does not load. This is a route to Myeongdong Station; a hotel nearer Euljiro may suit a different connection.

By airport bus 6015

Show the ticket agent your hotel address and ask which 6015 stop toward downtown is closest. The route includes the Myeongdong Station area and several other central stops; do not get off solely because a hotel name sounds familiar. At T2, buy your ticket before boarding. The operator requires advance ticket purchase at a counter or machine for these city-bound buses from March 5, 2026. Do not rely on tapping a transport card on board.

Staffed ticket offices are listed at T1 on 1F near gates 4, 6, 9 and 11, and at T2 on B1 near the west side of the short-term parking area. Use your ticket and the departure board for the current boarding bay. Ask how to stow your bags and keep anything needed during the ride with you. Road traffic can change arrival time substantially. Continuing to Gyeongbokgung or DDP

Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwamun Square

One practical route is AREX All-stop → Gongdeok / 공덕 → Line 5 toward Chungjeongno and Gwanghwamun → Gwanghwamun / 광화문. From there, walk north across the square toward the palace entrance. Jongno’s official directions list Gwanghwamun Station Exit 2 plus about a 10-minute walk. Choose an elevator route if needed and allow extra time at crossings. Official palace access directions

Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)

Take AREX → Seoul Station → Line 4 toward Hoehyeon → Dongdaemun History & Culture Park / 동대문역사문화공원. From Seoul Station the stops are Hoehyeon, Myeongdong, Chungmuro, then your destination. Follow DDP signs; Dongdaemun Station is a different station. Use the official multilingual subway map to check the connection. Check your particular exhibition entrance before leaving the station.

Taking a taxi? Show the driver these Korean phrases

Use the airport’s designated taxi stand and tell the dispatcher how many people and large bags you have. The airport lists standard Seoul-bound pickup areas at T1 as 5C, 6C and 6D, and at T2 as 7C. Follow current signs. Late-night surcharges vary by taxi type, and a quote should be checked for tolls and other charges. Save the phrases below as a screenshot. You do not need to pronounce them perfectly: show the Korean line together with the exact map pin. For a hotel, its full address is more useful than a broad neighborhood name.

For the first phrase, a rough pronunciation is “ee joo-so-ro ga joo-se-yo.” Showing the written address is still the more reliable option. A driver may need to use a permitted drop-off nearby rather than stop directly at a pedestrian entrance.

Late arrival, heavy luggage or a missed connection

• Check the time you can leave the terminal, not only touchdown. Immigration and baggage collection happen before the transfer begins.
• Check the last useful connection. A train reaching Seoul Station is not enough if your onward subway has stopped. Use your date, terminal and final destination in the planner.
• Look up a night bus separately. Its stops and departures may differ from daytime services. Check the airport’s night-bus timetable, then plan the final leg from its city stop.
• Keep a taxi or airport stay as a backup. Confirm capacity, total charging basis and your accommodation’s late check-in instructions before committing.

If you need step-free access, do not treat a short route on a map as proof that every transfer is suitable. Check station elevators and walking conditions, or ask staff to help choose an accessible route.

Before you leave arrivals
