Gyeongbokgung in Hanbok: Free Admission Rules Before You Rent

Wearing hanbok can be a lovely way to enjoy Gyeongbokgung. If you are renting mainly to save the entrance fee, though, first check whether you would normally pay admission. Then look at both the palace’s clothing rules and the shop’s rental price, extras and return deadline.

The palace decides whether an outfit qualifies for free admission. A rental shop’s description of an outfit as suitable is useful information, but it is not a substitute for checking the current official conditions.

What the palace means by wearing hanbok

The Korea Heritage Service’s Korean hanbok admission guidance accepts traditional and modern hanbok, with a complete outfit: a jeogori top and a chima skirt or baji trousers. An outer coat alone, a T-shirt with a hanbok bottom, or a jeogori with ordinary jeans does not meet those examples. Foreign visitors are included in the policy.

The English guidance also describes the complete top-and-bottom requirement. Details of garment descriptions differ between language versions, so do not reduce the decision to a single visible ribbon. If you are unsure whether an outfit matches the illustrated examples, show a photograph to the palace before committing to a nonrefundable rental.

Work out the actual admission saving

The official ticket page lists ordinary individual admission for foreign adults aged 19–64 at KRW 3,000. Visitors under 19 or aged 65 and over qualify for free entry, as do eligible hanbok wearers. Other conditions can apply, so check the category for each person rather than assigning the same saving to everyone.

For a person who would otherwise pay KRW 3,000, a qualifying outfit can remove that admission cost. It does not remove the rental bill. Compare the choice using this simple calculation:

Total with rental = rental charge + chosen extras + any remaining admission cost.

If your admission would already be free, the admission saving is zero. You may still want the clothing experience, photographs or occasion; any of those can make renting worthwhile for you. Just check the full cost before counting it as a saving.

Ask the shop for the full rental price

Write down the total you are agreeing to, not only the starting price. If the staff offer an upgrade, ask what changes and what the final bill becomes. Choose only the accessories you want; you can enjoy the visit without every extra.

Check the opening day and leave time to return your hanbok

Gyeongbokgung normally closes on Tuesdays, opening if Tuesday is a public or substitute holiday and closing on the next non-holiday, as explained on the official hours page. September–October regular hours are 09:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:00. These details were checked on 8 September 2026. Special evening programmes have separate conditions; do not assume a daytime admission rule is a night-event ticket.

Plan your time around whichever comes first: the rental return deadline or the end of your available palace visiting time. Allow time to leave the grounds, return to the shop and change. If that leaves very little palace time, shorten the rental plan or visit in your own clothes.

Choose footwear for walking and check that you can move comfortably in the outfit before leaving the shop. Keep entrances and paths clear when taking photographs. Choose a quieter spot or wait for a gap in the crowd so others can pass while you take a picture.

Two useful questions to show the staff

• 추가 비용이 모두 포함된 가격인가요? — Does this price include all additional charges?
• 몇 시까지 반납해야 하나요? — By what time must I return it?
