AREX Express or All-Stop? Choose the Right Incheon Airport Train for Hongdae, Gimpo or Seoul Station

The fastest-looking airport train is not automatically the best one for your hotel. The AREX Express runs non-stop between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station. The All-Stop train serves intermediate stations, including Hongik University (Hongdae), Gongdeok and Gimpo Airport. Decide from your actual destination before buying a ticket.

At-a-glance sequence
  1. Check final address
  2. Find nearest station
  3. Match train stops
  4. Verify ticket and platform
Two rail lines leave the airport; one goes directly to the end station while the other stops at intermediate dots before reaching the same end.
The non-stop line skips intermediate destinations; choose from the station you actually need.

Start with the nearest station to your address

Search your hotel or meeting place in a current map and write down its Korean station name. If it is 홍대입구역 (Hongik University Station) or 김포공항역 (Gimpo Airport Station), the All-Stop train serves it; an Express ticket would take you past it to Seoul Station. If you need 서울역 (Seoul Station), compare the two services' next departure, fare and onward walk rather than assuming the Express always saves time door to door.

At the airport follow signs for Airport Railroad, then read the platform and ticket-machine labels: 직통열차 is Express, 일반열차 is All-Stop. They are separate products. Confirm the terminal station and direction on the departure display before entering.

Check ticket and transfer separately

The All-Stop is connected to the metropolitan rail network. Use a valid transport card or the single-journey ticket offered at the machine, and check the fare for your destination. The Express uses its own ticket. Do not buy one type and assume it opens the other gate. If your itinerary includes a subway transfer, check the current route and fare in the operator's app or station display.

Train frequency, last service and price can change, and a flight delay can invalidate a tightly planned connection. Look up the next actual departure at the airport station, especially late at night. If rail service has ended, use an official airport bus or licensed taxi stand rather than following unsolicited offers.

A sentence that prevents the wrong ticket

At the counter show your destination and say '홍대입구역 가려면 일반열차 타나요?' (For Hongik University Station, do I take the All-Stop train?) Replace the station name as needed. Staff can point you to the correct machine and gate.

For large luggage or limited mobility, compare not only train time but the station exit and lift route. A direct train to Seoul Station may still require a long transfer to your final address.

A worked example

Your hotel is near Hongik University Station. The Express looks attractive because it says 'non-stop', but it does not stop at Hongdae. Select the All-Stop train and verify 홍대입구역 on the route display. If your hotel is instead by Seoul Station, compare the next departures and total journey.

Common questions

Does the Express stop at Hongdae?

No. Use the All-Stop for Hongik University Station.

Can I use the same ticket for both trains?

Do not assume so; the Express has its own ticket and gate.

Is the Express always faster to my hotel?

Only if its destination and onward transfer suit your address; compare door-to-door travel.
