Seoul Palace Closures: Monday, Tuesday and Secret Garden Tickets

Is Gyeongbokgung closed Tuesday? Normally yes, but a public or substitute holiday can shift the closure. If you have only one palace day in Seoul, check the weekday before renting hanbok or buying a timed ticket. Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Deoksugung normally close on Monday. Changdeokgung’s Secret Garden is a separate timed admission, so a palace-ground ticket alone does not secure the garden. The Korea Heritage Service visitor rules describe the holiday exceptions; verify the specific date on the official calendar.

Compare regular palace closures for your dates

Enter your first Seoul visit date to compare candidate palace days. The result is a weekly planning rule, so check each palace’s notice before travelling or paying.

Inputs stay in this browser. The shared link contains the date, number of days and garden choice; share it only with people who need them.

Public and substitute holidays can move a regular closure to another date. Check official palace notices for holiday shifts, events, weather and repair restrictions.

Record three checks before paying

  1. Choose candidate visit dates using the regular-closure comparison.
  2. Check official notices for holiday shifts or temporary changes, then check the admission deadline on the hours page.
  3. For the garden, confirm the date and session in the official system and your general-admission ticket.

Weekly rules checked 24 October 2026. Recheck official notices for your actual visit date.

Check access restrictions within the palace before visiting

Access to Geunjeongjeon’s woldae terrace at Gyeongbokgung is restricted from 2 September through 31 October 2026. This notice concerns the terrace, not a closure of the whole palace. Recheck official updates before visiting.

A result showing no regular closure on your chosen date does not guarantee access to every area.

When a regular closed day is a public or substitute holiday, the official rule may open the site and move the closure to the next non-holiday. That is why a blanket “all Mondays” or “all Tuesdays” answer fails around holidays. Temporary closures for weather, repairs or events can also override a normal schedule. Use the official hours page for your date, rather than trusting a generic map card.

Changdeokgung: two decisions, not one ticket

The palace buildings and grounds (전각 관람) and the Secret Garden (후원 특별관람) are different admission choices. The official Changdeokgung booking system says a visitor reserving the garden also needs to buy general admission. Select the right date and garden entry time, then check both tickets in the confirmation. A reservation request that has not been paid by its deadline can expire; a payment alert is not the same as a usable admission ticket.

The official system says online garden booking opens at 10:00 KST six days before the visit and continues until the day before, subject to availability; it also describes same-day ticket sales. These are booking rules, not a promise that your desired time will have seats. The booking page controls the current release calendar. If a Japanese or English commentary session matters to you, check the language for that specific time rather than assuming every garden entry includes it.

What to save for the gate

  1. Save the palace general-admission ticket and the separate Secret Garden ticket, showing the same date.
  2. Use the valid mobile ticket in the booking system or collect the issued paper ticket as directed. The operator says a printout of the reservation confirmation is not an admission ticket, and a screenshot of a mobile ticket is not valid.
  3. Arrive at Donhwamun, the palace’s main gate, with time to reach the garden entrance. The booking instructions say to allow 15 minutes from the main gate to the garden entrance. If paying for a garden reservation on site, the separate rule is to complete payment at least 20 minutes before the tour begins. Add a queue margin of your own.
  4. Check the entry time printed on the garden ticket. A paid ticket does not make a late arrival automatically admissible or refundable.

If the garden is unavailable

Do not discard the entire palace day automatically. You can visit the palace buildings if general admission is available on that date, or look at another open palace. Check each site’s own ticket and access conditions. If your main reason for renting hanbok is admission savings, read our Gyeongbokgung hanbok admission guide before paying the rental shop. A rental receipt cannot reopen a closed palace or grant Secret Garden entry.

Useful Korean to show at the ticket desk: 오늘 후원 입장권이 있나요? (“Are there Secret Garden tickets for today?”) and 전각 입장권도 따로 구매해야 하나요? (“Do I also need a separate palace-ground ticket?”) The official booking conditions answer the second question yes for a garden visit; asking can help you confirm what is already included in the tickets in your hand.
