A coloured line on a Seoul subway map may look one platform away, but the walk can be long. The important distinction is whether you follow an in-station transfer passage or leave through an exit gate. For an ordinary line change, follow the transfer signs inside the paid area before tapping out.
- Find next line and direction
- Follow transfer signs
- Stay inside paid area
- Ask staff after wrong exit

At the platform, check line and direction
Find your destination station on a current route map, then note the next line's number or name and its direction of travel. Follow '환승' (transfer) signs and the coloured line markers. Do not follow '나가는 곳' (exit) merely because it appears near the right line colour. Some interchanges have several levels and a substantial walk.
Korea Tourism Organization explains that line changes before leaving a turnstile do not incur a new base fare. Distance or special sections can still add to the fare; the Sinbundang Line is one example. A transport card or single-journey ticket must also be valid for the route shown at the gates.
If you accidentally exit
Stop before buying a new ticket and ask the station attendant whether your card and station qualify for any current re-entry arrangement. Seoul has limited schemes, but eligibility and stations vary; a blog's blanket 'free within 15 minutes' claim is not a safe rule for every system.
Show the station name on your phone and ask '환승하려고 했는데 밖으로 나왔어요. 다시 들어가려면 어떻게 하나요?' ('I meant to transfer but exited. How do I get back in?'). The attendant can explain which gate and fare apply to your specific trip.
When a gate rejects your card
Do not force the barrier or borrow another person's card. Check the displayed error and balance, then use the help intercom or staffed gate. A missed tap, insufficient balance or special-fare section needs different handling. Keep the card used to enter; switching cards partway through confuses the journey record.
A worked example
You are moving from Line 2 to Line 6 at a multi-level station. Before walking, identify Line 6's direction and follow '환승' signs inside the gates. If you pass through '나가는 곳' and land on the street, ask staff how to re-enter instead of assuming the transfer is still in progress.
Common questions
Must I tap out to change subway lines?
Normally no; follow the marked passage within the paid area.
Are all in-station transfers free?
A new base fare generally is not charged, but distance and special-section charges may apply.
Is re-entry always free within 15 minutes?
No. Ask about the current station-specific rules after an accidental exit.
