A KORAIL Pass and a reserved train seat are different things. Before buying a pass, list your covered train journeys, check seat availability and compare the current pass price with separate tickets.

Count eligible journeys, not days in Korea
KTO’s rail guide describes a foreign-visitor pass with 2, 3, 4 or 5 chosen travel days within a 10-day period. It excludes SRT, subways and temporary tourist trains. A Seoul subway day therefore does not justify a rail-pass travel day. Check the current eligibility and product conditions with KORAIL before payment.
Write down the exact departure station, arrival station and date for every intercity leg. Mark whether KORAIL operates it. Two cities with a similarly named station can still require another transfer; count that separately.

Confirm a seat separately
The KTO guide states that up to two seat reservations per day are available with the pass. Purchasing the pass does not put a seat number onto your intended departure automatically. Retrieve the pass through KORAIL’s official reservation service and complete the separate seat-reservation process.
Verify that the resulting ticket has the right date, train, carriage and seat. If your chosen departure is sold out, do not buy a pass on the assumption that a seat will appear. Ask KORAIL about available trains and permitted travel options, or reconsider the itinerary.

Use a simple break-even worksheet
Add the live prices of the covered single tickets you actually intend to use. Compare that sum with your applicable pass price plus any supplements. For an illustrative 180,000-won ticket total and a 160,000-won pass, the difference is 20,000 won before supplements; these are example inputs, not current fares.
A pass may be poor value if you cancel one long leg or spend most days on city transit. Keep passport, valid pass and the required train ticket available for inspection. Confirm refund conditions with the seller before purchasing, especially when an agency sells the pass.

| Pass total | Record the eligible pass price and any separately charged items. |
| Seats and flexibility | Choose only if availability and pass days fit your actual journey. |

A worked example
A Seoul–Busan return trip and several Seoul subway rides do not make every ride covered by the pass. Compare the two intercity tickets with the pass; city rides remain outside that calculation.
