If a KTX train is sold out, first widen your departure time, check other available services and compare feasible connections. Do not build your trip around a claim that special seats will always become available shortly before departure. A cancellation may help, but it is not a reservation strategy you can rely on.
This guide covers booking on the official KORAIL website, retrieving your ticket and finding alternatives when a train is sold out. The screenshots are real KORAIL screens captured on September 20, 2026; red boxes are our annotations. Dates, seats and availability are examples, not live offers.
When do KTX tickets go on sale?
The booking window is changing. KORAIL’s official reservation notice says that from October 1, 2026, advance sales extend from one month to two months before departure, with the normal opening time at 07:00 Korea Standard Time. For the transition, tickets for November 1–December 1 are announced for release at 10:00 KST on October 1. Check the notice for your travel date, particularly around special holiday sales. The older one-month wording was still visible on the search page when we captured it. Check the current official booking notice.
Set a reminder in Korea time, not just your home time zone. Decide your preferred departure and one or two acceptable alternatives before sales open. For a fixed event or a flight connection, the cost of changing the rest of the trip can matter more than getting a preferred seat.
How to book KTX tickets: the buttons to look for
1. Choose the actual stations and passenger count
Open KORAIL’s English ticket reservation page. For the example here, the route is Seoul → Busan. Check the station name carefully: choosing another station because it has a seat also changes your local journey.

Box 1 marks the example travel date. Box 2 is the time filter. Selecting 00 means “search from the start of that day”; it does not mean you must travel on a midnight train. Box 3 is Apply. Back on the main form, select Search.
3. Choose a train, then inspect its seat map
Read the departure and arrival times, train type and class before selecting an available seat option. KTX and slower conventional trains are different services; do not choose solely by the first available button. If you use a KTX filter, remove it when you want to compare other train types.
After choosing an available class, the booking flow can offer Seat Selection and Reservation. Open the seat map before continuing if a particular seat matters. The example below is the Japanese interface, which returned a usable seat map during our check; the English search intermittently returned no results. We have kept the original language visible rather than replacing its labels.

Read the direction and unavailable-seat legend. Use the socket/USB icons on the actual map rather than assuming every space between windows has a socket; the layout can differ by train.
4. Keep the booking email and retrieval password
The non-member information screen we inspected requested an email address, a booking password and confirmation of that password before proceeding. This is a password for the booking, not a request for your email account password. The captured form specifies 6–13 digits for the booking password. Check your email address and the digits entered, and keep the details somewhere you can access while travelling.
Read the terms and the final journey and fare details before proceeding to payment. We did not enter personal details, pay for a ticket or test a particular foreign card. A search result or seat-map selection alone is not proof that a ticket has been issued.

If payment appears uncertain, check MY TICKET and your card’s status before paying again. A card notification and an issued ticket are different things. What to try when your preferred KTX is sold out
- Widen the time range. Search earlier and later than your preferred departure, then compare the arrival time with hotel check-in and local transport.
- Relax the seating requirement. If your group can sit apart, check whether separate available seats work. This does not create capacity, and it may be unsuitable when a child needs to sit with an adult.
- Compare another class or train type. Check the total fare and journey duration before accepting the alternative.
- Consider a transfer with enough time. Compare both legs, the transfer station and whether both tickets can be secured. Do not buy a first leg that strands you when the second is unavailable.
- Recheck for cancellations without relying on a fixed release time. Keep a workable alternative, especially if accommodation or an event depends on arrival.
- Ask railway-station staff about options actually available for your journey. Do not board without a valid ticket on the assumption that a standing ticket or upgrade will be sold onboard.
A KORAIL PASS should not be treated as a way to unlock sold-out reserved seats. Check the official pass conditions and seat availability before deciding whether it suits your itinerary.
Changing seats onboard: conditions to check
A KORAIL announcement dated December 1, 2025 describes one onboard KTX seat change through KorailTalk, including certain standing/non-reserved-to-seat changes. The announced path is 나의 티켓 → 좌석변경 (My Ticket → Change Seat), followed by the change details and seat selection.
This does not guarantee an empty seat, a free upgrade, or availability of the same button for every foreign-language or website-issued booking. We did not verify that cross-channel case. If the option is absent, show your valid ticket to the crew. Never move into an apparently empty seat without an approved change; it may be reserved from a later station.
